NWI Welcomes GDC as a New ‘Full Member’

The Nonwovens Institute (NWI) is pleased to recognize GDC for its decision to join more than 45 industry-leading organizations as a member of the Institute.

Founded in 1955 as a supplier to the automotive industry, GDC has grown to become a total solutions provider for a wide variety of products and components to a range of industries. And while GDC supplies over 20 million parts annually for vehicles from Ford, Toyota, General Motors and Chrysler, it also provides innovative solutions for the agricultural, industrial and recreational markets. GDC brings expertise in a variety of polymer conversion technologies to meet industry needs.

Within the nonwovens space, GDC brings its proprietary Sonozorb™ acoustic insulation material to the automotive and related industries.  These materials are applicable to both conventional Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles where they can minimize typical road, environmental and vehicle noises, as well as to the growing Electric Vehicle (EV) market where the absence of masking combustion engine noise and the presence of unique-frequency noises from the electrical components create new and unique challenges for designers.

Sonozorb is a lightweight, durable, high-loft polypropylene-based material that creates a torturous path for sound waves – transforming them into thermal energy – and it is fully recyclable, naturally hydrophobic, mold and mildew resistant.

Sonozorb is a lightweight, durable, high-loft polypropylene-based material that creates a torturous path for sound waves – transforming them into thermal energy – and it is fully recyclable, naturally hydrophobic, mold and mildew resistant. GDC’s proprietary technology based on the SpunBlown™ process creates finer fibers and higher loft for better sound attenuation.  With GDC’s experience in die-cutting and other processes, Sonozorb can be delivered fabricated and finished to end-use specifications including fitting to complex shapes that might be found in automotive door panels or other applications.

GDC also prides itself upon its commitment to community with a skilled, US-based workforce, high production efficiency, environmental sensitivity and, during the COVID-19 pandemic, a rapid pivot to providing NIOSH-approved N95 filter media to meet critical demands for facial masks.

GDC illustrates the, perhaps unexpected, breadth of the nonwovens industry beyond the well-known hygiene, medical and filtration applications.
