NWI Welcomes Flavorchem and Orchidia Fragrances as a New ‘Affiliate Member’

Flavorchem & Orchidia Fragrances Joins NWI as 'Affiliate Member'

The Nonwovens Institute (NWI) is pleased to recognize Flavorchem & Orchidia Fragrances for its decision to join more than 45 industry-leading organizations as a member of the Institute.

Flavorchem was founded by two brothers, Salvatore and Phillip Sprovieri, in Chicago in 1971 and has grown to manufacture more than 5,000 products annually with a global presence.  In 1982, the family-owned company acquired Orchid Laboratories (now Orchidia Fragrances), which also had Chicago roots dating back to 1931, adding fragrance development and manufacturing to its portfolio.

Since its inception, Orchidia Fragrances has grown from its regional roots to become an international supplier of fragrances, essential oils, natural solvents, and botanical extracts with locations in Downers Grove, Illinois, and San Clemente, California, in the USA, as well as  Kerepes, Hungary, and Shanghai, China.

In 2022, Orchidia approached NWI with the aim of developing a new and superior approach for infusing fragrance into engineered fabrics. Through this development project, Orchidia expanded its reach into fragranced nonwoven materials across a broad range of custom applications.

“We worked with Orchidia to develop a new product that enables fragrance to be incorporated into meltblown and spunbond materials,” said Mehmet Dasdemir, director of product development at NWI. “This project is an excellent example of how NWI can help companies develop solutions that significantly expand their applications and relevance in nonwovens.”

Orchidia’s Scent Infusion Technology™ can be used to create engineered fabrics and filtration media that elevate the consumer sensory experience, while addressing a number of issues with prior-generation technologies. With Scent Infusion Technology™, fragrance is incorporated within the fibers, eliminating exposure and potential user irritation, as well as fragrance transfer to other surfaces. The time-release nature of the infused fragrance provides longevity and retention of the desired scent in the fabric and supports malodor control in applications such as footwear and hygiene.

“We are proud to partner with NWI on developing an innovative fragrance-infused technology. By merging our expertise in fragrance creation with NWI’s cutting edge research, Scent Infusion Technology™ will elevate and differentiate the performance of a wide range of non-woven commercial applications,” said Ross Sprovieri, CEO of Flavorchem & Orchidia Fragrances.

Membership in NWI brings a variety of benefits and can be scaled to meet member needs.
