[2-Minute Tutorial] Nonwoven Bonding Fundamentals
The following tutorial covers leading bonding techniques for nonwoven materials, including calendering, hydroentangling and needle-punching. The information is based on a segment of the upcoming Nonwoven Bonding Fundamentals Short Course, which will be presented Oct. 3 at The Nonwovens Institute (NWI).
The Nonwoven Bonding Fundamentals Short Course will provide a detailed overview of the major fabric bonding processes used to make nonwovens. The course will cover success factors for calendering, hydroentangling, and needle-punching, including troubleshooting techniques and guidance for process improvement.
“Bonding can be utilized to produce advantageous characteristics in the end product, while missteps in this area can lead to mechanical failure and other undesirable performance issues,” said Benoit Maze, Ph.D., director of education and administration at The Nonwovens Institute (NWI), who will be among the expert instructors leading the Bonding Fundamentals Short Course. “This is why having a strong understanding of bonding techniques is so important. We will provide proven best practices for bonding success in this course.”
Attendees to the Nonwoven Bonding Fundamentals Short Course will learn:
- How nonwoven bonds are formed and how strength is achieved
- The importance of line speed and temperature control in determining the effectiveness of thermal bonding systems
- The impact of jet pressure, jet strip design, and energy transfer to the nonwoven material in determining the desired bonding results in hydroentangling
- The nuances of needle geometry, needle board design and process parameters in determining the results of needle-punch bonding processes
- The evolution of nonwoven bonding technology and what the future holds
